Discharged.

Just like that, one word and some paperwork, and it was all over. Everything he’d ever hoped for--every point he’d ever made to every kid who beat him up for not being American enough, every dream he’d had of being a ranking officer like Lennox and having a good team behind him--was gone. He didn’t think he even knew how to be a civilian anymore.

He tried to console himself with the thought that he’d get to see his Mama soon and eat her cooking again. But he couldn’t shake the feeling that he should have died out there.

Esperanza gave him a wide-eyed, innocent look that didn't fool him for a moment.

"Naturally, when faced with this kind of presentation, people will assume the danger is in the sauce. They'll tell themselves that, so long as they don't dip, they'll be safe. Not so!"

Her expression turned slightly annoyed. At Myron's genius insight, no doubt.

"I just wanted to let you know I'm too smart to fall for that trick." Myron selected one of the lumpias, dipped it royally, bit down. Started coughing.

Esperanza sighed. "I'll get you some water."

“What.” She swung the M56 in a slow arc, covering her firefan, eyes keen. Behind her 10 feet, and in the opposite direction, Drake’s position on the perimeter-line outside the hootch the others were grabbing some sleep in.

“Sounds kinda weird, but…I like this. You, me, and the night. You know? Just us against the world.”

She could hear the quiet click of the beads; could almost see the nervous shrug. “Yeah. Me, too.” A fierce grin.

Time stutters and swirls over the island. The dead pass easily through it, particularly at night.

In the dark, Michael can stride through decades and centuries.

Jin crouches at the side of a brook, his jumpsuit pale as bone.

"I miss you," Jin says. In Korean, the syllables angled and pitted. Michael's dead now, unconstrained, so he understands.

He echoes Jin's words, gulps them down with the humid air.

They speak of, and to, her; both trapped here, one quick, one dead, while she lives, abroad.

They address each other, too, husky and shy, needy, as when all three lived.

Between the time he had been born and when he had gotten the VISOR, he had only known a dark world. He had known what others had said about him, when they thought that he couldn't hear them.

Why was he blind in a world that had the technology to correct such a mistake? Or why hadn't his parents had the impairment corrected when he was young?

His VISOR was helpful in giving him sight.

When he did decide to get the ocular implants in his eyes, now he felt had a chance to free himself of the dark world.

It's eight days to Johannesburg, an eternity crammed in a car with Sloth and four slightly hostile almost-strangers. In my worst moments, when Celestin is crying and Armand won't stop turning the radio to iJusi, I dream of abandoning them all on the side of the road.

I calm myself by imagining Benoît's face when we motley crew appear at his hospital bedside. In my fantasies, his gratitude is tangible. Polygamie--that old offer--floats through my mind.

Then we're there, and he has eyes only for Celvie. They're radiant. Passionate.

Guess it's back to my first plan: getting lost.

Yumiko is standing in the torii gates’ shadow when Sei leaps upright. Her orange skirt blends with the bright-painted wood; she tells herself this is why Sei overlooks her, Sei who has eyes only for the three pale strangers entering the shrine.

Yumiko watches Sei kiss the strangers with abandon, watches them begin to run.

Later, others tell her how honored she was to witness the first quarto’s entrance into Palimpsest. But it does not feel like an honor to Yumiko, who once claimed she was beyond love. It feels like her heart breaking when Sei flies past and disappears.

A gorgeously crafted missed scene and bittersweet - perhaps slightly more bitter than sweet, but it's Yumiko/Sei, so um. Eep.

Yay, another Palimpest fan! I have a soft spot for all the people left behind in that book--maybe not Clara, I never really found her all that interesting, but Yumiko, Nerezza, Hester. The book is carefully crafted so none of the protagonists feel tied to the "real" world, but it doesn't necessarily work the other way around.

He heard her voice speaking from the mortal cocoon that held her when they met again. Heard her late night confessions through his pets.

It made him more determined than before. And with the blessings of her father, the king, he would free her of the mortal shell that now held her spirit in it.

Jimmy doesn't cook much.

His nine-year-old self, sick and tired of doing homework in the restaurant, would be delighted. Back then, he hated the smell of peanut oil and sharp, sour onions that clung to his parents' hands, their hair; he resented the time they spent over the giant wok, precarious atop the tiny gas range, as they wilted limper than their noodles. Those anxious hours they devoted to bookkeeping!

All that time, better spent with *him*: so he believed.

Now he has another life before him, more time than anyone needs. He still can't spare an hour to cook.

“Sometimes, I wish I hadn’t been chosen. That it had been the girl in Germany or the girl in Kenya. One of the ones who wanted to be a Slayer, instead of just knowing it was her duty.”

Kendra looked down at the stake in her hands, afraid to meet the eyes of the American girl she was sitting with. Buffy was different than other Slayers had been in the past, but that didn’t mean she would understand or accept. Just this once, though, she needed to make the admission.

“I know,” Buffy said softly. “Sometimes I wish that too.”

Yuffie positively beamed as she set the platter down in front of her friends. Her first actual cooking experience, done entirely by herself without any of the palace staff or the fussy teacher his father had hired to train, and it had come out beautifully. The real test would be the eating though. She looked expectantly at her friends.

Barret was the first to respond. “So, what is it?”

“Um, fish and cabbage in a pastry, with spicy sauce.”

“That don’ sound too bad.” She beamed when he reached out an took the first of the snacks from the plate.
