Prompt: raising a toast for all they've lost and for all they've won.

----

The train keeps going, the motion under their feet and silence between them.

Opposite their seat is the reality - a screaming baby and his mother, a wedding ring and tear-streaked face evidence enough of what was left behind. Wan feels Yeo-Kyung tense, and it's all he can do not to scream.

He pulls out a flask - warm whisky, an afterthought he was glad he remembered - and after taking a swig, passes it to her with a lopsided grin he hoped was typical.

"To friends," he mutters against her ear, and with tears in her eyes, she smiles.

Baked Goods, Transformers G1, Raul

Prompt: a picture (A tray of cinnamon rolls.)

Raul smiled at the smell as he pulled the cinnamon rolls out of the oven. They were the kind from the can in the cooler at the grocery store, and wouldn’t taste a thing like the ones his Gramma had learned to make after she had brought his dad to America, but the smell reminded him of his childhood and many hours spent in her care. He drizzled the icing on while they were still hot, and happily remembered doing the same in her kitchen as a child.

He should probably share with his crew. Gramma would have done that.

Morning, Aliens, Vasquez (prompt 6)

hellkitty: (lazy cat)
From: [personal profile] hellkitty
“Get off me,” Vasquez shoved Drake away. Always did like to get a little too close, pressing his shoulders against hers, mouth hungry. The harsh light of the barracks-bay made his hair glow like some fiberoptic. Her mouth still stung from the kiss, stirring up heat and desire that were welcome enough after cryosleep, but man, Drake pushed boundaries.

“Come on.” He slid the worn fabric of their shorts together, so she could feel the close heat and hardness of his arousal. “Morning wood for like 557 mornings.”

She clapped a hand over his mouth. “Seriously. Morning breath to match.”

Connection, Star Trek TOS, Uhura

rosehiptea: (Koga)

Prompt: connecting the distant past with the distant future

Uhura holds the hands of the person in front of her. Sunset – the best translation Uhura can make - has blue skin, a frilled face, and does not understand the concept of gender. And Sunset's language is not audible but communicated by touch – shifting patterns of the fingers on the palm.

It's difficult, especially with only five fingers rather than eight, but they are patient. Slowly, Uhura learns the creation story of Sunset's people. The gentle patterns will become engraved on Uhura's mind, along with the songs and speech and writings of the most ancient languages the galaxy has found.

Lady of the Island, LOST, Miles Straume

gloss: annoyed man squinting off-frame (Lost: Miles grown)
From: [personal profile] gloss
prompt: connecting the distant past with the distant future

Miles has no time for ghosts. He hears the dead all too clearly to bother with any bullshit.

And he never looked at his mother straight-on, not as a teenager, especially not as her belly starts to grow.

Her red kerchief's in his back pocket. It still smells like her, oranges and jasmine. She left it behind in the cafeteria one morning; she'd come in with it over her hair, still damp from the rollers.

It burned, scarlet and crimson and beautiful, on the table until he grabbed it.

He keeps her close now, for a "now" that becomes forever.

Katara watches their children play in the temple courtyard and turns to Aang. She means to share a smile, but his face is tense, distant.

"Sometimes it feels like I'm raising them in a burial ground," he admits.

To her, the temple is as it should be: their family's private refuge. She tries to see it through his eyes, empty where he expects crowds.

"It won't always be just us," she says slowly. "They'll have children, someday, and so will their children. It will be like you remember it again. Full of life."

He nods, and leans into her touch.

Lovely. I can see how it would be painful for Aang to raise his children there.

In daylight, the harem rang with the sounds of life: Teyla's laughter, Diro's cries. But the Lady's time still brought ghosts. Each night, Diora named them: Faida. Ruatha. Deirdre. And, last and softest, their child.

She had the voice; she could speak so all the Tors and Tyrs might hear, or murmur to a single ear and know it inviolate. Her words could cross cities, deserts, seas.

But death, ah, death like childhood was a different territory. She could stand atop her wives' graves, and they would never hear.

She named them anyway, in darkness, and whispered the cradle song.

Prompt: the cinnamon rolls!

Mas stared at the giant plate of cinnamon rolls. It wasn't the usual kind of food his friends served, even if most people would call it normal American food.

Genessee nudged him. "One won't hurt you," she said.

"I shouldn't eat anything that big," he muttered.

She put her hand on his arm briefly. Mas looked around to make sure no one had seen, and Genessee laughed.

"Sometimes it's alright to give in to temptation," she said.

He tried not to think too hard about what those words could mean as Genessee licked a bit of cinnamon from her finger.

Excalibur, Crusade, Matheson & Galen (prompt 3)

"The sword in the stone," Galen muses. "Not the most hopeful of names, is it?"

Matheson's no expert the way Eilerson might be, but he's not completely ignorant either. "It helped bring about an era of peace and prosperity, a generation of better people – people trying to live up to an ideal that was bigger than themselves. How could that not be hopeful?"

"Ah." Galen smiles without a hint of indulgence. "But it all ended in tears, didn't it? Tears and treason."

"We'll do better." They can't afford not to, given what's at stake.

"Perhaps." Galen sounds less than convinced.

"Cinnamon rolls!"

This, Takeshi thought, was why he disliked working with Kentarou so much: the guy simply had no sense of priorities. Here they were, rushing to their secret headquarters, and here Kentarou was, wasting precious time to help himself to some baked goods.

"Saving the world is no excuse to skimp on your lunch," Kentarou told him, once he'd caught up, probably noticing Takeshi's frown and (correctly) guessing its cause. "It's important to eat regularly. Here, you should have one, too."

Takeshi only accepted the roll because arguing about it would mean wasting even more time.

(It was delicious.)

Al Foster, private eye, was excellent at keeping secrets. When it came to clients and their private, personal affairs, Al was the very soul of discretion.

Unfortunately, when it came to his own private, personal affairs, things were a bit different.

"He got you a sexy dress for your birthday." The joys of a live-in teenager.

"Indeed."

Well. Not quite the explosion he'd feared. Of course, knowing Rai, there was more to come. Worse.

"How'd you think he got your sizes?"

Silence. Al started counting to ten. Slowly.

Rai grinned, obviously enjoying this. "Maybe he pictured you while you were – "

As far as smugglers went, Reynolds and his crew were about as reasonable about stowaways as most, which was to say: not very.

"Look," Lando said, oozing sincerity and praying his intel had been more or less accurate, "I needed to get out of there in a hurry. I've got no money, but I'm sure we can work something out."

"Optimistic, isn't he, sir?"

"A mite, yes." Reynolds gave him a long look. "Still. Might so happen I need a man for a job."

"Look no further." Lando spread his hands, smiling. "I'm your man, Captain."

(Should have known better.)

Note: officially, SW takes place 'a long time ago'.

As do I - but when I was brooding on another prompt for Lando, I remembered that, hey, 'distant past' character right there. *g* (It still kind of feels like cheating? I mean, you see spaceships and galactic empires, you don't exactly think 'distant past'.)

Happy you enjoyed!
