He sat in the restaurant alone.

It was a classy joint; the kind of place Monique would have liked. They never would have gone to some place like this when he was home, though, because a sitter for five kids was expensive as hell and his salary wasn’t that good. But it was nice to go out and pretend.

His waitress kept giving him suggestive looks and winks and he couldn’t decide if she was hitting on him or the uniform. Didn’t matter; he’d never cheat on his girl.

With a sigh, Bobby Epps signaled her over and ordered dessert.

His wife’s picture was on the caller ID. he answered with a smile. “hey, baby.”

“Hey, handsome. How’s my favorite flyboy?”

Bobby laughed. “I better be your only flyboy. I’m good, but I miss you.”

“I miss you too. Any news on that job offer?”

“Not yet. But you’ll be the first girl i tell.”

“I better be. I’d hurt you if I found out you told Sarah first.” There was a smile in Monique’s voice that made that night a little less lonely.

“Dessert,” Hicks said. He looked just about as uncomfortable as she did, stiff and buttoned up in his Dress Blacks, the high red braid of the collar biting into his throat. “What? They don’t have strudel in the hood?”

“Stow that class warfare shit,” Sergeant Apone barked across the table. His eyes blazed malice at the both of them. “It ain’t gonna kill you.”

“Damn straight,” she said, grabbing her fork. “Take more than fuckin’ pastry to take me out.”

Everyone knows Misty. They turn to her when she passes, high-five her, call her name.

You can't just throw things together and hope things will turn out any given value of 'all right'; you need to do your research, your shopping, pre-heat the oven.

Somehow, he manages to get everything right (it's not a given – it never is) only to have Danny take one look at this piece of culinary art he's recreated, declare it 'smells good' and devour it in one bite.

"It's only half," Hunny looked pitiful and pleased with himself at the same time; to limit his intake of sweets was still a grave injustice but (his expression suggested) he would bear it bravely and make the best of it.

Mori nodded solemnly. Half a piece of strudel was, he felt, acceptable. It was less than a whole piece.

"And I'll have a little bit of ice cream. And some syrup. And also – " Hunny hesitated.

"Haruhi likes strawberries," Mori said.

"I'll have one," Hunny announced eagerly. "With a little bit of powdered sugar to make sure it's sweet enough."

There's little peace to be found in no longer being part of the war, Charles discovers – no longer able to 'fight the good fight', he now finds his role reduced to that of an on-looker or, more often and much worse, a 'could have been'. He'll watch the news and think critical thoughts, saved only from being bitter by his own stern inner voice that tells him each hero has his (or her) own way of doing things, and that there are no bad ways, as such, any more than that there are bad heroes.

Sometimes, he almost believes himself.

Shinrei charges – face contorted in a fury at least half born out of despair (Bontenmaru thinks) because Hotaru is yet unmarked and Shinrei is bleeding, has stopped bleeding from a shallow wound barely worth the name; they are as evenly matched as the hours that have passed since Shinrei's challenge suggest, and likely as not, this will only end once they are both too tired to continue to be stupidly stubborn about things.

When Hotaru dodges, he barely seems to move; only the result proves the action, as Shinrei standing unmarked shows Hotaru has not struck at him this time.

Koga bit down on the inside of his cheek. He could tell his young challenger so many things, including to leave his gym, but he wouldn't.

He knew that as long he still drew breath there was hope, and that there were many ways to defeat one's enemies.

But it did make Koga feel just a bit better that the boy had no skill, and that when he badly lost he left without a smirk.

"I suppose we should be grateful the subjects she picked were mostly harmless," Eli said, studying a drawing depicting the Golden Gate bridge covered in flowery garlands. "Imagine what might have happened had she enjoyed post-apocalyptic landscapes or some such thing."

Victor snorted. "Nothing, most likely. Her talent isn't that strong."

Eli pointedly looked at Victor's clothing. "Strong enough to have an effect. But no, you're right, affecting the entire city would have taken a very strong talent."

"She caught me off guard." Victor looked annoyed. "It won't happen again."

Eli smiled. The Hawaiian shirt quite suited Victor, he felt.

Myron looked nervous. Also, he was using first names only, which was fine by Esperanza; she didn't mind the familiarity, except that for practical purposes, it might be good to know the name of Myron's friend-and-associate.

Preppy Blond nodded at her. "Windsor Horne Lockwood III. At Myron's clients' service."

Cute. Esperanza pleasantly nodded back. It probably didn't fool him, but then, people like Blondie generally didn't much care whether or not people liked them.
