In daylight, the harem rang with the sounds of life: Teyla's laughter, Diro's cries. But the Lady's time still brought ghosts. Each night, Diora named them: Faida. Ruatha. Deirdre. And, last and softest, their child.

She had the voice; she could speak so all the Tors and Tyrs might hear, or murmur to a single ear and know it inviolate. Her words could cross cities, deserts, seas.

But death, ah, death like childhood was a different territory. She could stand atop her wives' graves, and they would never hear.

She named them anyway, in darkness, and whispered the cradle song.
