Shireen can still feel her. The skin on her palms and fingertips burns as if Atie is right here, trembling and giggling.

But Shireen's hands are empty. They were once extensions of each other, twice as much as anyone else. From now on, she has only her own hand, ten fingers, and her own whisper, one tongue, two lips.

She will not look at Mehran; what he takes for compliance, she considers resistance. Modesty is her shroud. He'll see no more of the truth, only what he expects.

Atie escaped to Dubai. Shireen withdraws inside filmy silk and lonely pretense.
