Resurrection, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Katara/Aang (prompt 3)

Katara watches their children play in the temple courtyard and turns to Aang. She means to share a smile, but his face is tense, distant.

"Sometimes it feels like I'm raising them in a burial ground," he admits.

To her, the temple is as it should be: their family's private refuge. She tries to see it through his eyes, empty where he expects crowds.

"It won't always be just us," she says slowly. "They'll have children, someday, and so will their children. It will be like you remember it again. Full of life."

He nods, and leans into her touch.

Lovely. I can see how it would be painful for Aang to raise his children there.
ambyr: icicles fused end to end and wrapped in a spiral around a young tree (nature sculpture by Andy Goldsworthy) (Winter)

Yeah. The horror of the complete destruction of a people--bar one--is almost too much for me to grasp.
